[...] This passage cracks me up, as it’s another example of how obvious it is that the Bible was written by man. Or, if not written by man, how big of an indifferent bastard god really is. Seriously, think about the implications of this passage: a man was ordered to ejaculate inside his sister-in-law. He didn’t, and god killed him for it. On the other hand, men like Hitler, Stalin, Hussein (and so on) can kill and torture with impunity, and are not killed by god in the same fashion. Apparently, god feels that the ejaculatory fluids of a single man were more important than ending the lives of some of the most terrible men in world history. God can’t save the lives of children burning to death on their way home from church camp, but boy does he hate it when you pour your hot, steamy cup of DNA on the floor. [...]

The fact that anyone suffers at all is kind of what I'm getting at. For an all powerful god, suffering of his saints is completely unnecessary. Verses like that are called "escapist counters". It's exactly what you would expect a man to say when he has no rational proof to support his superstitions. "I have no proof, therefore I give you hope". I suppose that's honorable in itself; but it doesn't make it any more true.

Seriously, think about it: this god created the UNIVERSE. The SUN. The MOON. Out of absolutely nothing. And yet, He can't seem to help even one single, small, tearful child when he really needs Him. If you get no proof of god in this life, if god offers you nothing of benefit to the only five senses that we possess, what's the point in believing that he'll give you an afterlife?

A stupid, but easy to grasp analogy would be if I asked you if I could borrow $5 every day. I say that I'll pay you back tomorrow. I never pay you back, but you keep giving me $5 each day in the hopes that I will, in fact pay you back.

A year later, I've won the lottery, and I come across you. You've lost your wife and kids to a house fire. Now, you're starving and homeless. To give you $5 would be nothing to me, the lottery winner, especially considering the commitment you showed me in your constant lending. And yet, I don't. As I walk past you, I look at you, knowing full well that I could help you. I promised that I would pay you back. And yet, I don't. Instead, I offer this: "I promise that in one year, I'll give you $1 million, but each day you need to keep giving me $5."

I have all the power in the world to save you from your destitution. You have done everything I ask in being faithful to me. And yet, I don't. Instead, I offer you some mysterious and grand future.

Unless you're a complete idiot, you'd stop believing my promises that very second.

In short, if I fail to keep my promises, or if I fail to even show you compassion in the here and now, what's the point in trusting me to provide you with a fantastic "there and later"?

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us." Romans 8:18
